The spaces we inhabit are not neutral. Every room, corridor, office, and outdoor plaza sends continuous signals to the nervous system, shaping how safe, focused, or overwhelmed we feel, often without our awareness 1. Environmental Psychology and Biophilic Design

Environmental psychology studies the relationship between human beings and their surroundings, examining how manufactured and natural spaces affect those who use them 2. Its formal foundations stretch back to 1970, when the publication Environmental Psychology: Man and His Physical Setting by Proshansky, Ittelson, and Rivlin highlighted the significance of relationships between human perceptions, behaviors, and built environments, addressing physical, psychological, and sociocultural dimensions together 3.

The field has since developed numerous theoretical models, from attention restoration theory to behavior setting theory, all attempting to articulate how humans interact with their surroundings 3. The research has also shifted in focus over time. Where earlier environmental psychologists concentrated mainly on negative responses such as depression, anxiety, and stress, the field now explores positive human experiences too: happiness, meaning, and well-being within defined spatial contexts 3.

Humans perceive their environment through six sensory channels: vision, hearing, smell, skin-sense of air, haptic touch, and kinesthesia. Any physical setting engages these organs to produce mental responses, whether auditory, tactile, or visual 3. Every design decision, from the texture of a wall to the height of a ceiling, carries psychological weight.

One of the most consequential applications of this understanding is biophilic design: the practice of incorporating natural elements into built environments. The concept rests on the idea that human brains evolved to thrive in nature, and that reconnecting with natural elements promotes emotional resilience and mental wellness 4. Biophilic design goes well beyond placing plants on windowsills. It encompasses the holistic experience of a space and its relationship to the natural world, including views, light quality, and spatial variety 5.

The evidence for its benefits is substantial. Studies cited in the book Biophilic Design provide scientific support for the claim that contact with nature is necessary for human function, health, and well-being 5. A report titled "Human Spaces: The Global Impact of Biophilic Design in the Workplace" found that natural elements such as sunlight and greenery can increase productivity by 6%, while both creativity and perceived well-being increase by 15% 5. Nature also promotes outdoor connectivity that provides psychological relief from mental distress 3.

Material choices matter too. Research in environmental psychology shows that textured materials — concrete, stone, wood — are consistently associated with feelings of heaviness, strength, tradition, and connection to nature, while smooth materials like glass and metal evoke calmness, modernity, and cleanliness. These associations hold whether a person is touching or simply viewing the materials, meaning that design choices carry real weight in how people feel inside a space 2.

What Noise, Light, and Temperature Do to the Mind

Three environmental variables have particularly well-documented effects on cognition and mood: noise, light, and temperature.

Noise is among the most disruptive. When someone is startled by a sound, elevations in blood pressure and heart rate can persist for hours afterward 6. In noisy settings, people become less engaged, less reflective, and less caring; they tend to seek simple solutions and are more likely to give up on complex tasks 6. Noise can increase patients' perception of pain and their use of pain medications, contribute to confusion, and impair sleep. Light is equally consequential. Lighting levels affect human moods and feelings, stimulate mental strain, and can alter circadian rhythms 3. Poor indoor lighting tends to reduce psychological well-being 3. Exposure to natural daylight and circadian lighting, designed to align with the body's internal clock, can improve both mood and cognitive function 4. Classrooms with windows offering nature views have been associated with higher student test scores, suggesting that light quality and visual access to the outdoors interact in meaningful ways 4.

Temperature appears in biophilic design frameworks as "thermal variability," one of the 14 Patterns of Biophilic Design identified by Terrapin Bright Green. The recognition here is that subtle variation in thermal conditions, as found in natural environments, contributes to comfort and well-being 4.

Small changes in any of these variables — lighting, noise levels, airflow, or layout — can shift a person's baseline stress without them realizing it 1.

Workspace and Built-Environment Design

The built environment has capacities for creating physical, biological, and psychological impacts on human health and well-being, directly or indirectly 3. Spatial ergonomics — shape, size, height, dimension, fixture, and density — affect human psychological perceptions positively or negatively within living and working environments 3.

Some of these effects are deeply instinctive. People prefer the edges of rooms to wide open, exposed spaces, where they feel more vulnerable. This is why restaurant perimeters fill before central floor areas, and why booths, with their higher backs providing a sense of security, are the most sought-after seats 2. A well-designed space can encourage lingering or socialization; a poorly considered one misses the small adjustments that appeal to innate human instincts 2.

In healthcare settings, the stakes are especially clear. A systematic review of over 600 papers examining the link between design and mental healthcare concluded that environmental enhancements have a positive impact on the health and well-being of both staff and patients 6. Art in clinical environments has been shown to reduce anxiety and depression in specific patient groups, favorably influence clinical and behavioral outcomes, enhance staff morale, reduce vandalism and aggression, and make environments feel more uplifting 6. Surgical patients with views of nature recover faster and with fewer complications than those facing a brick wall 4.

Research into emergency department waiting areas illustrates how targeted design interventions can address stress directly. One ongoing study surveyed approximately 126 participants in an ED waiting area, assessed their anxiety and reactions to environmental elements, and used those findings to develop design schemes tested through virtual reality and walk-throughs, aiming to reduce stress for patients, caregivers, and staff 2.

The WHO recognizes physical factors of the built environment as health determinants that may affect mental health in terms of cognitive perceptions and physical responses, triggering anxiety, stress, and depression 7. This recognition has driven research into design guidelines that begin with the needs of fragile populations — the elderly, people with sensory or cognitive impairments — and extend outward to improve liveability conditions for all 7.

In workplaces specifically, integrating plants and natural elements into walls, dividers, and storage units represents a practical application of biophilic principles that uses space efficiently while delivering measurable psychological benefits 5. The goal of environmental experience design (EXD) is to accommodate users' needs and demands for the enhancement of their health and well-being, recognizing that the built environment is a system occupied by people whose perceptions and behaviors shape the consequences of that system 3.

The physical environment is never passive. Its qualities engage our deepest senses, emotions, and intuitions, shaping the way we feel and experience the world 2. Understanding that relationship is the first step toward designing spaces that genuinely support human flourishing.
