What Happens in the Brain During Attention

Attention is the mechanism by which the brain allocates its limited cognitive processing resources to a subset of information, thoughts, or tasks 1. It is not a single, uniform faculty. Researchers commonly distinguish several core types: selective attention (focusing on particular stimuli while ignoring others), sustained attention (maintaining focus over extended periods), divided attention (allocating resources across multiple tasks), and alternating attention (shifting focus flexibly between tasks with different cognitive demands) 1.

Focus and distraction are often treated as opposites. They are now understood as distinct processes. Focus is the ability to direct attention while ignoring everything else; distraction is when attention is pulled away from a task and shifted elsewhere 2. The brain regions involved are not identical, and that distinction matters for understanding why concentration can be so difficult to sustain.

What Happens in the Brain During Attention

Attentional control involves a network of brain regions rather than a single center. The intraparietal and superior frontal cortex handle preparing and applying goal-directed selection for stimuli and responses. The temporoparietal cortex and inferior frontal cortex are specialized for detecting behaviorally relevant stimuli. The prefrontal cortex plays a particularly important role in switching attentional control as task demands change 3.

Trouble focusing or blocking out distractions is tied to weak connections or information pathways across different regions of the brain. Those pathways can change and develop in ways that may improve these symptoms 2. That plasticity is central to understanding why focus can be trained.

Sustained concentration also has natural limits. Most people can maintain concentration for somewhere between 20 and 40 minutes before needing a break. Psychologists call this waning of attention the "vigilance decrement," attributing it to either a reduction in cognitive resources or goal habituation. Brief breaks can reduce goal habituation and help people maintain vigilance for longer 4.

Environmental stimuli compete for attention in ways that bypass conscious intent. A loud sound or a bright light from a phone can capture attention even when a person is actively trying to ignore distractions. This bottom-up pull operates independently of goals 5.

The Costs of Switching Attention

One of the most consistent findings in attention research is that the brain does not transition seamlessly between tasks. Every time attention shifts, there is a reorientation period — a switch cost — that consumes time and mental resources 6. When writing, stopping to do something else and then returning requires reconstructing the thread of thought: the topic, the argument, the words in progress. That reconstruction takes effort on top of the work itself 6.

Multitasking forces the brain to switch focus back and forth very quickly. The human brain cannot do this without cost 7. One study found that the typical person checks email once every five minutes and that it takes, on average, 64 seconds to resume the previous task after checking 7. Accumulated across a workday, these interruptions represent a substantial drain on cognitive resources.

The consequences extend beyond productivity. Rapid attention switching is associated with more errors — a pattern documented in real-world studies involving physicians, nurses, and pilots — as well as slower overall performance 6. Divided attention also creates dangerous blind spots: when focused on the wrong thing, people can miss important changes in their environment, particularly in fast-changing situations like driving 5.

Experimental cognitive psychology has demonstrated these limits through dichotic listening and shadowing tasks, which show that people are not successful at managing increased cognitive load when doing two things simultaneously. The bottleneck that limits attention creates a similar bandwidth constraint for working memory 5. The evidence does not support the idea that multitasking is productive.

This is not a new finding. As early as 1927, A. T. Jersild showed that completing a mixed list of items took longer than completing a pure list, highlighting the costs of switching between mental sets 1.

Shrinking Attention Spans and the Digital Environment

Gloria Mark, a psychologist and chancellor's professor of informatics at the University of California Irvine, has spent two decades studying how people interact with technology in everyday settings. Her research finds that attention spans have been shrinking over that period, with multiple measures converging on this conclusion 6. The rise of the internet and digital devices — unending sources of distraction — appears to be a significant driver 6.

The relationship between digital technology and attention goes beyond distraction in the moment. Frequent switching trains the brain toward shorter engagement windows, making sustained focus harder to achieve over time. Multitasking under these conditions is also stressful: maintaining vigilance requires hard mental work and is a genuine source of cognitive stress 4.

Deep Work and the Neuroplasticity of Focus

Because the information pathways underlying attention can change and develop 2, focus is not a fixed trait. The brain's capacity for sustained concentration responds to how it is used. Increases in beta brainwave activity are tied to sustained focus and attentional control, and biofeedback technology that specifically increases beta waves has been successfully used to treat attention disorders 4. Theta waves, in some situations, are also related to task focus 4.

Work sessions organized around the brain's natural rhythms — hormone and activity cycles that operate on roughly 60 to 120-minute intervals — may support longer periods of effective concentration. Based on these rhythms, sessions of one to two hours are considered probably optimal 4.

Understanding how attention works is the first step toward managing it, and toward recognizing who and what is competing to monopolize it 5. The science does not suggest that deep, sustained focus is beyond reach. It suggests that focus is a resource with real limits, real costs when mismanaged, and real capacity for development when treated with care.
